Even with no lighting except for the flame's glow, Michael could make his figure out, tall and ugly. It tore its hand away at the feeling of hot metal. Whatever it was, it couldn't remember where to go for the life of it. Perhaps it was panic, perhaps it was the fire burning away identifying markers of its place in the building, or maybe it was simply that Michael had not taken but one tour of the halls on foot since it got there. It had seen the schematics of the restaraunt hundreds of times throughout the course of the last five nights, but found itself at a loss with directions. It continued forward, deeper, sweat flicking off its hair and skin. Flame lurched into the hallway, threatening to grasp at Michael with pneumatic claws. Michael sprinted into a run again, barely dodging a door as it popped off its hinges and clattered to the floor. It had to circle back around to the front quickly as possible, escape into the morning.

Well, it would have been ideal, had there not been the decaying corpse of a serial killer dressed in a rabbit suit threatening to jump out at every corner. Smoke moved upward, so staying close to the ground would be ideal. What was it they had said to do in a fire situation? Stop, drop, and roll. It leaned against a wall, tried to collect its thoughts. The fsshh of flame catching material hissed from the next room. Its eyes were watering so badly it couldn't see. Even with its shirt clasped over its mouth, Michael was coughing. The thick, dark smoke was dehabilitating. But the gasoline had caused the fire to spread fast, creeping towards the entrance of the restaraunt. It had started the fire in the office, towards the very back. It was stupid for not thinking of a better route, a less obvious one.Īnother one of Michael's mistakes was heading deeper into the restaraunt rather than trying to get him away from the door. If he was going down, he was dragging it with him. It should have known he wouldn't have let it escape easily.
It should have known he would be at the door. This was a fucked up mess, and Michael's lack of foresight was going to kill it. This was no pot of mac and cheese or an overcooked frozen pizza. The house had smelled like smoke for days. Once, it had even forgot to set the timer on the oven and ruined a frozen pizza by burning it to a crisp. It had broken many glasses from haphazard placement on countertops, unthinking of its future clumsy escapades that would inevitably send the glass shattering on the floor.

For one, it sometimes started a pot of noodles for mac and cheese, only to realize it had no milk to mix in halfway into the dish. The lack of this skill manifested itself in small ways. Foresight had never been Michael's strong suit.
